Standard utility allowance (SUA)

A fixed utility figure most states use instead of actual bills in the SNAP shelter deduction.

Instead of collecting utility receipts, most states assign a standard utility allowance — a fixed monthly amount used in the SNAP excess shelter calculation for households that pay heating or cooling costs.

SUAs are often higher than actual bills, so using your state's SUA can legitimately raise your benefit. Values vary widely by state and are published on state SNAP sites.
